Given the following proposed mechanism, predict the rate law for the overall reaction.?
I’m pretty bad at explaining things, but I’ll try.
Since the 2nd step is slow, it determines the rate of reaction. So focus on that step. The rate of that step, and therefore the whole reaction, depends on the concentration of A and B. Double [A] or [B] and you double the reaction rate. To get one mole of A, though, you need half a mole of A2. This is because A is an intermediate; you can’t just get it out of the blue. So, the rate-determining step depends on A2. Since the coefficient for A in the reaction 1/2 A2 –> A is 1/2, the reaction is 1/2 order with respect to A2. Your rate law is k[A2]^1/2[B] because the reaction is 1/2 order with respect to A2 and 1st order with respect to B.
