Global Entrepreneurship Summit: Plenary Session: Cherie Blair – MR.RAO: For those of you who are unaware,
minus the famous surname, she was a lawyer back in 1976.
She started her own law firm. And for the first time in the history of Britain,
she was the first wife of a Prime Minister who had her own career. I think that was the first time that has ever
happened in British history. So Cherie, how difficult was it to be in the
limelight and also to have your own career? And I'm sure there must have been a fallout. There must have been a few issues that emanate
from it. So let's talk about it. And how difficult is it, again, to be in the
spotlight, again, and to fight it out through your own career? CHERIE BLAIR: Well, I think that, first of
all, one of the reasons I was the first spouse of a Prime Minister to actually have gone
to university, and that includes Dennis Thatcher who didn't go to university, by the way, is
just a generational thing. My predecessors, if you like, were of a different
generation where girls, you know, didn't get educated. In fact, Dorothy Macmillan, the wife of Macmillan
the Prime Minister, actually told her daughter that she shouldn't go to university and stopped
her going to university. Because she said all she needed to do was
to know how to run a household. So there's a generational thing and a change
in what we expect from women. What was it like holding down a full-time
job as well as being married to the Prime Minister? Well, I didn't think after 20 to 25 years
in my own career where I'd work when I had three children under five, when I was essentially
supporting my husband as he went on his political career– why would I change my job just because
he had changed his? Now, this did cause — MR.RAO: Absolutely. [APPLAUSE] MS. BLAIR: This did cause some consternation in
Downing Street. Because they basically expected me to be there
to be the hostess and to support and to be wheeled out on the occasions when it was required. And I did all that, by the way. But one of the things that enabled me to carry
on with my career actually was IT. Because by the time I got to Downing Street,
I was able to conduct my business through — from Downing Street. So I might be dealing with my legal papers.I
might be answering client's queries from my desk. My client would not know where I was, nor
would they know that possibly half an hour before that I'd
been down greeting the First Lady of Tanzania to have tea with her. Now, I couldn't do that without IT. And that made a huge difference to me. And it's why, when I left Downing Street and
I was thinking if IT makes such a difference to a fortunate woman like me, surely there
must be opportunities for using IT to bring advantages to women entrepreneurs across the
world. And that's one of the missions of my foundation,
which is to help women with what we see as the three Cs that they need for growing their
own business. And the three are– we've mentioned one already,
Confidence. Because too many women are told what they
can't do, not what they can do. The second C is Capability,
Capacities, training. It's– women, again, don't get the same access
to education across the world as men do. Business is partly instinctive. But partly, it's about knowing how to run
things right, how to read a spreadsheet, how to build a business plan, how to make the
right sort of pitch to get the sort of money that Chanda will then loan you whatever capital
that you need. And the third one is access to Capital. And capital is a big issue for women entrepreneurs. And I know there must be many of them in this
room that know only too well that when it comes to getting the money to grow and expand
your businesses, it's very hard to move the needle to get beyond the skeptical of the
male officers in the banks who don't actually really believe that a woman can succeed in
business. And so we work with our women to build those
things. And we do that by using technology. And finally, I'd say this. know, if we're going to do anything in this
world, we've got to do something about men. [LAUGHTER] MR.RAO: All right. MS. BLAIR: Yeah. That includes you. Men need to– [LAUGHTER] –men need to understand that women are very
coarse. Men need to understand that the women do face
obstacles that they don't understand. And men need to understand that they need
to do their share as well. I was recently at the American Embassy in
Delhi where we'd done a program with the American Embassy called We Can. And I have two of our women entrepreneurs
who won that competition are in the room here. But we had a group of 25 Indian women entrepreneurs
who came to present their business ideas. At the same time, the American Embassy had
invited along some IT entrepreneurs that they had been working with, mainly men. And the women were talking about that obstacles. And yet one of the young men stood up in the
audience, said, I don't understand what this woman is talking about. He says, sometimes when I go to an interview
or to seek a business, people ask me about whether I'm married. And you know, I don't find that offensive. So why are these women complaining that they
can't get any help and assistance, because when they come there all everyone is asking
them about is whether they're married. And that just showed — the women were very
firm with him about there is a difference. Because for a man here, if you say you're
married,vpeople will think, oh,vresponsible, not likelyv– you know, got responsibilities,vlikely
to be a good bet. For a woman here who's looking for capital
incomes and they say, are you married, and she says, yes, I am, they think, oh, difficult–
going to get pregnant, you know, got other responsibilities. So it's a completely different mindset. And unless young men, like the young men in
those rooms, understand that understand the difficulties that their wives and their sisters
and, yes, their mothers are experiencing, then we're never going to change this dynamic. MR.RAO: Thank you, Cherie. In fact, you talked about– [APPLAUSE] .

Project Proposal Writing: How To Write A Winning Project Proposal – [Music Intro] >>Hi.
I’m Devon Dean, content director here
at ProjectManager.com. Today I’m going to teach you how to help sell your project using
a project proposal. A key thing to remember is that people buy from people. Don’t expect
the project proposal document that you put together to be taken up by the decision makers
in an organization in isolation of any communication you’ve had with them and award funding and
resources and mindshare to that project. It’s important to remember this because you can
write the best project proposal document but without that people interaction you have a
slim to no chance of getting your project funded. While you’re preparing the project proposal
document it’s really important for you, your project sponsors and the champions of
your project to go out there and actively lobby the decision makers of your organization
about your project. Use those lobbying sessions and those one on one meetings to actually
refine and hone your understanding of what the problems are in your organization and
the benefits that your project can actually realize, that strike a chord with those decision
makers. In developing your project proposal document I highly recommend in tandem going
out there and actively seeking the feedback of those decision makers so that feedback
help you refine and forge the sales pitch you put together in your proposal document. Your decision makers are going to make the
decision whether to thrill or kill that project within the first five minutes of picking up
your project proposal document so it’s really, really critical that you make a big impact
right at the start of that project proposal document. The way you do that is in stating
that problem statement. You really need to paint a bleak picture of your organization
that shows or depicts the problems that you’re having in the organization which could be
overcome had your project been in production when those problems occurred. Highlight some
specific examples of where opportunities were missed or where risk or costs were incurred
that your project could have prevented or could have gained access to in terms of opportunities
if your project had delivered by the time of that event. Efficiency gains or general skills uplift
are not the messages you want to communicate in terms of looking for those problem benefits.
By saying that Sally works 50 hours a week and your project is going to solve that problem
is really not going to strike a chord for those decision makers. Look for those specific
examples of where your company missed an opportunity or incurred costs because your project wasn’t
in place. Put those in your problem statement. Now the vision statement is a section that
needs to tie your project to the company’s long range strategy and vision and long range
goals. Without tying your project in to your organizational strategy and vision you run
the risk of having your project being looked upon as a rogue project: it’s out there
in the distance, it really doesn’t fit with what we’re doing so you run a risk of not
having your project being funded because of that reason. You need to tie your project
into your company’s organizational strategies and vision. Benefits further expand upon the vision that
your project will have, that you paint the picture of that vision. You’re going into
a bit more specific details on what are the things your project will deliver, what new
capabilities or what costs you’re going to avoid by having the project deliverables
in place. Be very specific about the benefits and make sure they’re things that are measurable. The deliverables section further goes into
another level of decomposition about what your project is going to deliver. It talks
about the artefacts which your projects will deliver and how those will be delivered in
terms of what the users can expect. A deliverable might be, for example, for a call center project
you’re delivering new computer telephony integration. That would be a deliverable when
that call center has that equipment. Success criteria are very important to outline
in that project proposal. You need to be able to have smart success criteria which mean
it’s specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. These success criteria, once
they’re met, give the project owners, the decision makers and the stakeholders 100%
confidence that your project has achieved success. It’s important that you list out
those criteria which everyone is looking at your project to deliver. The next section is talking about how your
project is going to achieve the deliverables and success criteria and benefits. In here
is where your deadlines are listed, where the project plan comes together and what the
approach to delivery might be for your project. Are you going to use external vendors? Are
you going to use internal staff? Are you going to use an agile approach to delivering that
project or are you going to use a more traditional waterfall method to enable your project to
deliver on its deliverables? Lastly, of course, the cost and the budget.
Here’s where you pull it together and you show the funding plan for that project and
how it’s going to achieve its deadlines against those deliverables and for the dollar
value. Now if you find in the first section that
you’re getting into quite a lot of detail that runs past, let’s say, two pages I think
it’s really important to take the time and consolidate all the high points from these
into an executive summary for that document. Put the high level problem, visions and benefits
in that exec summary. As I mentioned before, decision makers will take about five minutes
looking at your proposal to make sure that it’s something they’re going to fund or
decide that they’re not going to fund it in this year. Ensuring those messages are
concise is really critical and by putting these elements into executive summary if you
find them going long is a really important way for you to quickly communicate those ideas. It’s important to remember the flow of the
document in the proposal. You need it to flow like a fiction book. You need to tell a story
and paint a picture and leave no stone unturned for your decision makers to ponder. Everything
needs to flow from the start of the problem down to the cost and benefits in terms of
the key themes of your project need to be expounded upon, need to be mentioned at the
start and then further drilled down upon throughout the rest of your project proposal. If you
have items that you’re introducing in your deliverables, for example, that don’t fit
in with solving the problems you’ve identified up here or fit in with the benefits that you’re
going to realize your decision makers will look at that and it will cause them to think
a little bit more about your proposal in terms of does this proposal really communicate in
a tight way the objectives that it’s going to achieve for the organization. It needs
to flow. All the items here need to mesh with one another and not introduce any new topics
or any new items as you go along in the project document. Your project proposal is one key way for you
to communicate your project’s vision and benefits to the organization but a project
proposal in itself is not going to sell your project and get it funded and resourced. Only
you can do that. Only your champions and your sponsor can do that. Like I said in the start,
the proposal will help you sell your project and get it funded and resourced but really
you need to be there actively lobbying for that project and getting it off the ground. For more project management tips and tricks

Number one thing that make cities and countries flourish is entrepreneurs.
And some of them try to enrich themselves by creating perfect circumstances for entrepreneurs to succeed. They do that by designing entrepreneurial ecosystem. And with that being said, today I'm going to take you through one of those ecosystems and give you steps how to create it. I think every entrepreneurial ecosystem should be designed to fulfill three things. First is human capital companies need a smart workforce. Second is capital. They need money, offices, equipment etc. Last one, mentorship to really increase startup chances to succeed. So, when building entrepreneurial ecosystem we should focus on fulfilling these three things. So, first, I will start with capital. In the beginning for entrepreneurs is vital to raise money. Usually first they raise it from their own savings and family and friends. Later they rise it from venture capitals and angel investors But problem with investors is that it's really hard to attract them into a city or a country and it takes a lot of time However, it's possible. To do that government need to build a name connected with entrepreneurship. It's like building a name of a company like Apple or Coca-Cola But the only difference between this that we are creating a name for a region. Startup City Ecosystem for Entrepreneurs
First step, that must be taken to build entrepreneurial ecosystem and solve capital problem is to give entrepreneurs reason to immigrate into our region and start their own companies. For example, we can establish favorable laws and regulation for entrepreneurs or even fund them. But then we need to find a way how to market that idea. Problem is that country countries usually didn't have so much influence around the world to make that idea spread. And also, I think it wouldn't be very smart because it can interfere eight other countries. So, we still can market that idea in inside our country and after sometime hopefully big companies like Facebook or Google, Apple would be created. And they attract a lot of smart people through immigration by offering their big salaries and that inevitably will catch an eye of investors. Maybe, they will decide to immigrate in our region with all their money, that they are willing to invest. That's how we can solve capital problem. Next we have human capital. For entrepreneurs to scale their company They need to have enough smart people Fastest way to get them is through immigration. There is two ways how to do that. First is by using big companies to get them as employees by offering big salaries. and second is through education. I mean universities and schools. They didn't have to be one of the best in the world, but it should be at least decent and more important factor well-known. They need to have 1. Great lectures 2. Expensive and real equipment 3. Culture, that encourages students to start their businesses But to make everything work smoothly there need to be a financial relationship between businesses and education institutions Startup City Ecosystem for Entrepreneurs
Businesses need to provide education institutions with money and in return businesses get highly qualified workers from all around the world because of immigration. That's how human capital problem can be solved. Next and last one. We have mentorship. To build successful entrepreneurial city ecosystem We have to find a way how to help entrepreneurs to run their companies. We can do that by giving them a mentor type of help from big companies and from investors We can create it by crafting culture, which foundational value would be aid between companies. This value should be disseminated through education and through a religion. Also, we need company's involvement into our culture creation Companies should create events for society where they present their products and businesses That would raise an entrepreneurial spirit and build the trust between entrepreneurs. So, we craft culture in order to create better environment for entrepreneurs. All in all, to create successful ecosystem for entrepreneurs we need to attract a human capital through immigration, capital resources from investors and mentorship between companies through culture.
